A birdie on the 17th hole helped local favorite Donna Andrews to make the cut in the U.S. Senior Women’s Open played at the Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines.

Donna, who lives in Southern Pines, will join a field of 51 players that will compete in 18 holes of stroke play in Round 3 Saturday and will culminate on Sunday with championship round.

When asked if Ms. Peggy Kirk Bell would be proud that the senior open has come to Pine Needles, a course she once owned, Donna said “Oh, I know Ms. Bell is shining down on us. I think this is just a tribute to her because of all that she did for women’s golf. That’s why a lot of the players came to play was to honor Ms. Bell.”

Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club is still in the hands of  Ms. Bell’s daughters, Bonnie McGowan and Peggy Miller.
