Driver crashes trying to avoid deer

A woman driving on U.S. Highway 1 in Vass crashed at the Vass exit after trying to avoid hitting a deer Tuesday night. Emergency units were dispatched just before 10 p.m. to the single-vehicle accident.

According to authorities, a BMW SUV was traveling northbound, swerved and crashed through the cable barrier, and crossed the southbound lanes before coming to a stop against the guardrail at the entrance to the offramp.

The SUV suffered significant front-end damage.

The driver was the only occupant and was transported to Moore Regional Hospital to be checked out.

One lane of U.S. Highway 1 was shut down for a brief period while crews worked the scene. Vass Police Department was on the scene investigating the accident.

Responding to the scene were Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Vass Police Department and Moore County Sheriff’s Office. Oakley’s Towing removed the vehicle.
