Driver escapes injuries after rollover crash on Highway 1

A man was on his way to lunch at Bob’s Pizza on Saturday when his attempted U-turn didn’t quite go as planned.

Emergency units were dispatched to U.S. Highway 1 at Northern Dunes Drive near Vass just before 11 a.m. They arrived to find a Chevrolet Silverado upside down in a ditch beside the southbound lanes.

According to authorities on the scene, the older man was traveling north on Highway 1 when he attempted to make a U-turn at Northern Dunes Drive to go south to Bob’s Pizza. During the U-turn, he ran off the shoulder of the road, causing the truck to flip upside-down into a ditch.

Good Samaritans from Ed’s Gun Shop ran over to assist the driver out of the vehicle. He was the only occupant.

EMS checked the man out at the scene, but he was uninjured and did not require transport to the hospital.

The turning lane to Northern Dunes Drive was shut down briefly while crews worked the scene.
