A serious crash involving an 18-wheeler and a Toyota passenger car shut down a portion of N.C. Highway 73 just inside Moore County for several hours Saturday afternoon.Â
The two-vehicle collision happened in the 6900 block of N.C. Highway 73 between Derby Road and Pooles Mill Road in Jackson Springs.
According to authorities on scene, a Toyota Corolla traveling south toward Montgomery County crossed the center line into the path of a Volvo 18-wheeler being driven for Harris Teeter.

The male driver of the truck, who was not injured in the crash, ran off the right edge of the highway to try to avoid the collision, but the Toyota collided with his truck on the driver’s side. Both vehicles slid to a stop, completely blocking the highway.
The impact significantly damaged the Toyota, peeling the outer shell of the driver’s side away from the car.

The female driver was seriously injured, and a medical transport helicopter was requested but later canceled, and she was transported to Moore Regional Hospital. Her condition is currently unknown.
Other than a couple of flat tires and at least one bent wheel on the trailer, the truck sustained an approximately 50-gallon fuel spill due to its tank being ruptured in the crash.
Aberdeen Fire Department responded to the scene with a Moore County Public Safety trailer to assist with mitigating the fuel spill. Per Harris Teeter’s policy, a crew responded to the scene to clean up the fuel spill.
Both vehicles were removed by Rockwell Towing, and N.C. Highway Patrol was on scene investigating the crash.
Responding were West End Fire Department, Seven Lakes Fire Department, Aberdeen Fire Department, Derby Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, N.C. Highway Patrol and Rockwell Towing.
