A Southern Pines couple in their 70s are recovering after an intruder savagely beat them with a blunt object and his feet, fist, and teeth Saturday night. The incident occurred at a home on East Connecticut Avenue in the 700 block.

The couple remains in the hospital with serious injuries. The male victim is reportedly in the ICU.

Charged in the crime is a Fort Bragg soldier from Texas. Jacob Jadon Lee, 25, is a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Lee is charged with first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault on a female, injury to personal property and injury to real property.

He remains in the Moore County Detention Center under a $300,000 bond.

According to sources, Lee was seen earlier in the night in a Southern Pines establishment. Reportedly, the couple’s injuries could have been much more severe, but a man staying at the residence intervened and fought with the suspect.

Lee’s first court appearance is set for March 9 and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
