A head-on collision left a man dead Friday afternoon in Carthage.
During a heavy storm, a Dodge Ram pickup truck and a semi-truck struck each other on 15-501 around 3:30 pm. The elderly male driver of the pick-up truck died on the scene despite CPR efforts. The man was Donald Winfree, age 77, and he was from Candor. The driver of the semi-truck had minor injuries and refused transport to the hospital.
Responding to the scene were Moore County Sheriff’s Department, Moore County EMS, Carthage Police Department, Carthage Fire & Rescue, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue.
Both lanes on 15-501 were closed due to the accident and traffic was rerouted.
