A motorist was seriously injured when his vehicle struck a tree on U.S. Highway 1 in Southern Pines Wednesday evening.

The driver of a Ford Focus was headed south on U.S. Highway 1 when he ran off the right hand side of the road at the ramp leading onto Pennsylvania Avenue. The man’s car slammed into a tree just off the road.

Emergency crews called for a helicopter to airlift the patient to a trauma center, but they could not fly due to the weather conditions. The patient was then transported by ambulance to Firsthealth Moore Regional in Pinehurst.
