Family mourns loss of dog in fire

A family is mourning the loss of their dog who died in a house fire in Vass. The home is located on Water Hills Lane, off Union Church Road. The call came into 911 just before 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Initially, it was reported that no one was at home at the time of the fire, but a short time later, fire crews were told the grandfather could possibly be inside the house.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they quickly entered the home to attack the fire and found no one inside the residence. Firefighters quickly had the fire knocked down.

Cypress Pointe Deputy Chief Jonathan Richardson advised firefighters had found the family’s dog deceased inside the home. He said the majority of the damage had occurred in the kitchen area, but the home had significant damage.

The Red Cross was called to provide assistance to the family.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. There were heavy storms in the area at the time of the fire, and a lightning strike has not been ruled out.

Responding to the scene were Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue, Whispering Pines Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County Public Safety, Vass Police Department, Moore County Sheriff’s Department and the Moore County Red Cross.
