Female life-flighted after crash near Vass

A crash near Vass sent one person to the hospital and another to a trauma center on Tuesday.

The two-vehicle accident happened on Union Church Road near the intersection of McIntosh Road around 4 p.m.

A Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling eastbound around a curve when the male driver noticed a Nissan Rogue traveling westbound was crossing into his lane.

He ran off the shoulder of the road to try to avoid impact, but the Nissan hit the left rear of his car, spinning him around, according to officials on scene. The impact ripped the wheel off of his car. The Nissan left the roadway and stopped just a few feet from a corn field. It had heavy front-end damage.

The female driver of the Nissan was flown to a trauma center at UNC from a landing zone in a field nearby with what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mercury was transported to Moore Regional Hospital to be checked out.
Both drivers were the only occupants.

Union Church Road was down to one lane for over an hour while crews worked the scene. Eastbound traffic was diverted down McIntosh Road.

Highway Patrol was on scene investigating the crash.

Responding units were Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Whispering Pines Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Moore County Schools Police and N.C. Highway Patrol.
