Morganton Road to remain open during roadwork

Construction on the final segment of the Fayetteville Outer Loop will begin in August after the N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $151.8 million contract.

The last segment of the loop, or Interstate 295, will stretch 5 miles in Cumberland County between Camden Road near Hope Mills and Raeford Road (U.S. 401) in west Fayetteville.

The department awarded the contract this week to Branch Civil Inc. of Roanoke, Virginia.

As with the rest of I-295 that has been built, this final segment will comprise four lanes with a grassy median and interchanges with bridges and on and off ramps. As part of this contract, an exit will be built at Camden Road, southwest of Jack Britt High School, and another exit will be built on a realigned Strickland Bridge Road, south of Century Circle.

When this segment is completed by the summer of 2026, drivers on I-295 will be able to continue south of Raeford Road, where they must now exit.

Other loop segment

The other I-295 segment under construction stretches from just south of the future Camden Road interchange to I-95 near the Robeson-Cumberland county line.

This segment will have interchanges at Black Ridge Road and at Parkton Road. This segment includes widening I-95 from its present four lanes to eight lanes between mile markers 37 and 40. All of this work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.
