A garage caught on fire Thursday morning in Cameron on Briggs Road, and the smoke could be seen at least 15 miles away.

The call initially came in as a shed fire; however, when emergency crews arrived on the scene, they quickly realized it was a garage fire with a generator, an acetylene tank, and propane tanks inside the garage.

A firefighter on the scene said, “It was burning with a vengeance.”

The blaze melted the plastic siding of the back and side of the house and melted the taillights off of a car that was parked 100 feet away from the building, and the garage was a total loss.

To make matters worse, authorities had to have several firetrucks shuttle water to the scene because there wasn’t a water source nearby.  The firefighters were on the scene for almost three hours.

Cypress Pointe, Crain’s Creek, Benhaven, and Spout Springs Fire & Rescue responded to the scene while Southern Pines Fire & Rescue stationed a truck at the main station in Vass to cover other incoming calls.

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
