The Pentagon confirmed Wednesday approximately 1,700 service members of the 82nd Airborne Division will deploy to Poland, while 300 service members of the 18th Airborne Corps will deploy to Germany to support NATO as discussions have stalled with Russia over its military buildup at the border with Ukraine.
A Fort Bragg official released the following statement regarding the mission to deter Russian aggression.
“We are always prepared to deploy at a moment’s notice to conduct contingency operations in support of our national security objectives. Our Soldiers and leaders across our formations are ready for this operation,” says Capt. Matt Visser, XVIII Airborne Corps spokesman.
U.S. Representative Richard Hudson, Fort Bragg’s Congressman, released the following statement on the deployment of the 2,000 troops from Fort Bragg.
“The deployment of 2,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps to aid our NATO allies underscores the vital role America’s Immediate Response Force plays in the defense of our nation,” said Rep. Hudson. “Renee and I are praying for these soldiers and their safe return home. We also pray for the families they leave behind and honor the sacrifices they too make every day.”
North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis released the following statement.
“Thank you to the brave men and women at Fort Bragg who will be deploying to allied nations in Eastern Europe as Russia threatens democracy. Fort Bragg is the tip of the spear for our military, and I am proud to represent it. Susan and I will be praying for a successful deployment and our troops’ safe return home.”
