George Floyd memorial service Raeford

A memorial service for George Floyd is being held in Raeford on Saturday at the Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters located at 10225 Fayetteville Road.

Floyd died on May 25 in Minnesota after a police officer pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck while detaining him, sparking protests throughout the country. Four police officers have been charged with his death.

Floyd was born in Fayetteville but grew up in Houston.

Public viewing is from 11 – 1 p.m. A private memorial service begins at 3 p.m. and is only open to Floyd’s family, said Hoke County Sheriff Hubert A. Peterkin in a statement.

“As the Sheriff of Hoke County, I’m asking on behalf of the Floyd family for those who plan on attending the viewing/memorial service to be respectful to the sensitivity of the family’s time of grief,” said Peterkin. “The memorial is about the life that Mr. George Floyd lived and this is a time to embrace the family with expressions of love and kindness.”

The sheriff said no protesting will be allowed on the premises.
