Habitat for Humanity’s 2018 Women Build started on a mission months ago raising not only donations but awareness of the needs of women in our community. Women Build is about empowering women to go beyond what they “think” are their capabilities and realizing the power of women working together.

When women come together, great things happen, and that is exactly what happened on last Thursday at the Country Club of North Carolina. The Hard Hats and Heels Fashion show was an enormous success thanks to the Chairperson Sally Brown, the Women Build Committee, and the boutiques, models, and vendors that made it all possible.  Fabulous outfits and accessories were provided by Cool Sweats, Eve Avery, Marie & Marcele, Cooper & Bailey, Morgan Miller, R. Riveter, Monkees, Pink of the Pines, J. McLaughlin, Kataphora, and The Clothes Horse where on display for a sold out crowd of over 200 women from the Sandhills community.

Habitat for Humanity 2018 Women Build is focused on helping Alicia and Linwood Hockaday to realize the dream of home ownership.

“We congratulate the Women Build committee and the community’s successful evening which raised over $19,000 for the Hockaday home.  Currently, the committee has raised over $25,000 of their $100,000 goal,” said Stacy Lebak, Marketing and Communications Manager for Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills.

Mrs. and Mr. Hockaday are raising their two young grandchildren and live in a cramped apartment where the electricity bill alone exceeds $300 a month. With their new energy efficient home, their mortgage and utilities will be a fraction of their current housing expense. This will allow them to build financial security for their family and invest in a future for their grandchildren.

Mrs. Hockaday has worked at First Health Moore Regional Hospital for over 30 years, and this steady income will ensure the mortgage payment, which in turn provides the income for Habitat, to continue to build affordable housing. In addition to the 300 hours of sweat equity each will put in into the project, they attend classes that create strong homeowner skills.  Their home will be located in West Southern Pines, and construction will start in April 2018.

“At Habitat, we believe everyone deserves a safe, decent, and affordable home. Our goal is to work together to build those homes and help families succeed in their home-ownership journey. We build so children have a secure place to study for school, and we build so hardworking parents can dream even bigger dreams,” Lebak added.  “We build for those in our community who make it a great place to live, and we invite you to join us. We are proud to serve as a leader in affordable housing and lending in the Sandhills, providing a hand up…not a handout.”

Creating awareness at the Fashion Show is only the first step, Habitat needs not only donations of money but donations of muscle. Build days are scheduled throughout the spring and summer.
