Homicide investigation underway in Moore County

A homicide investigation is underway in Moore County.

Deputies with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of N.C. Hwy 24-27 and Tarry Church Road, northwest of Eagle Springs, Thursday evening to assist fire and rescue units with a male subject that had been found in the road with multiple traumatic injuries.

Upon the arrival of deputies, Bernabe Mujica, 44, of Biscoe, had succumbed to those injuries and passed away, according to a news advisory from the Moore County Sheriff’s Department.  An examination of the victim on scene led deputies to begin investigating this incident as a homicide.  An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Information quickly developed on this case, and a person of interest was identified and wanted for questioning in relation to the homicide. The person of interest was located within a few hours by N.C. State Highway Patrol on unrelated charges. Charges were upgraded for Alan Thomas, 20, of Asheboro, to murder. The sheriff’s department said the suspect and victim were acquaintances, and that this was not a random act of violence.
