Homicide investigation underway in Southern Pines

A homicide investigation is underway in Southern Pines.  Tevin Barrington Spencer, 27, of Eagle Springs, was found deceased when officers responded to Brookside Park Apartments on Shaw Avenue for a shooting that occurred at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

“This incident was not a random act of violence, and there is not an ongoing threat to the community,” said Southern Pines Police Captain Kyle Marsh in a statement. “A person of interest has been detained in the investigation.”

No additional details are being released at this time during this active investigation.

This is the third shooting Sandhills Sentinel has reported on in Southern Pines in less than three weeks.

The other two shootings occurred on Nov. 20 and Nov. 21. The Nov. 20 shooting occurred on South Mechanic Street near the intersection with West Massachusetts Avenue. The victim, Shaquille Jones, 26, of Jackson Springs, was driven to Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst in a private vehicle.

For the Nov. 21 shooting, police were dispatched to Brookside Park Apartments. Authorities identified the victim in a press release as Jeremiah McBride, 22, of Cameron. He was airlifted from the Southern Pines baseball field to an area trauma center.

It has not been reported to Sandhills Sentinel if the victims passed away from the November shootings. Police said that both of those shootings were not random acts of violence.
