COVID cases reported at detention center

A man who attempted suicide last week while being held in the Moore County Detention Center has died.

Jack William Garner, 33, of Carthage, died Sunday, according to a news release from Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

Garner died at First Health Moore Regional Hospital ‘from complications resulting from an attempted suicide by hanging himself in an interrogation room within the Rick Rhyne Public Safety Building’ last Tuesday.

Garner was being held after he was arrested by Moore County Narcotics Detectives on several felony drug charges.

“He was being held in an interrogation room while the warrants were being prepared by detectives when the attempted suicide occurred,” said the news release.

Sheriff Fields had already notified the State Bureau of Investigation shortly after the incident occurred.  Since this is an active investigation, no further information is available at this time.

The release stated, “Sheriff Fields and the members of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office offer their most sincere condolences to the Garner family.”
