You may have seen one of Joe DeVito’s over 150 television appearances on Comedy Central, “The Late Late Show,” “Last Comic Standing,” or most recently, Fox News Channel’s “Gutfeld” where he is a writer and frequent panelist. Or maybe you were among the 8 million and counting who have watched his Dry Bar Comedy special, “Dating Over 40 is Like Thrift Store Shopping.”
This Saturday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m., Joe DeVito will bring his live standup comedy to the Owens Auditorium stage at Bradshaw Performing Arts Center (BPAC) in Pinehurst for one performance only.
Whether taking on relationships, his Italian American family, or current events, Joe DeVito’s dead-on timing, unexpected twists and sheer flights of lunacy make him a favorite on television and in clubs across the USA, as well as the top comedy venues in New York City.
When DeVito started out doing standup, he realized, as he puts it, “The only way to get good at this is to perform,” he said. “You can’t just sit in front of the mirror telling jokes into your hairbrush. You have to get up on stage, see what it’s like to have the lights on and people staring back at you, and then react in that situation. The tough part is when you first start out … You’ve got to learn how to take that beating for the first two years and I think if you can stomach that, then you’ve got a shot.”
Now, with a career spanning over two decades and hundreds of live standup comedy performances, DeVito has honed his craft and perfected his timing to become one of the most sought-after comedians in the business. His comedy blends observational humor, storytelling, and satire.
“We’re grateful he agreed to be part of the first season of BPAC’s mainstage series,” says Executive Director Morgan Sills. “Comedy brings people together, he’s as smart and insightful as he is hilarious, and anyone who wants to hear Owens Auditorium rocking with laughter should join us at the show.”
BPAC’s 2022-23 mainstage series continues with legendary singing group The Four Freshmen on March 3, and Tony Award-winning, Emmy and Grammy-nominated Broadway leading lady Kelli O’Hara in concert March 18.
