Litter clean-up kits available at S.P. Library

In celebration of Earth Day, the Southern Pines Public Library invites residents to help keep our community beautiful by checking out new litter clean-up kits.

Launching on April 22, the library will now circulate two kits provided by the Friends of the Library containing everything a group needs to host a small-scale litter cleanup.

They include safety vests for five people, four litter grabbers, collapsible traffic cones, compostable trash bags, gloves, and alcohol wipes.

The kits are great for small groups who want to look at making a big difference in the appearance of our community and can be checked out by a library cardholder and used for a week.

In the local region alone, the NC Department of Transportation picked up 490,425 pounds of litter in 2021 at a cost of $927,229. Local residents can help make a significant impact on the amount of waste on our roadsides.

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, heavily littered areas experience more crime, see reduced property values, and can experience a decline in tourism.

Questions about the kits can be directed to the library by calling 910-692-8235 or visiting 170 W. Connecticut Ave.
