Authorities begin a homicide investigation on Union Pines Drive in Carthage on June 24, 2017/Sandhills Sentinel.

Deputies found the body of Darrel Long, 63, with a gunshot wound in the chest in a camper on the property, said Hardin. Long had been living there in the camper.

The night before, Jayne McRee and Long had an argument at dinner when Jayne McRee told Long he had to move out in the morning, said Hardin. The argument turned physical when Long grabbed Jayne McRee by the neck. Long went back to the camper for the night.

Janye McRee contacted her son, the defendant, who came to Long’s camper with a .38 Special caliber revolver. The defendant shot Long one time in the chest and left the scene, Hardin said. Long died from the gunshot wound.

Detectives recovered text messages between the defendant and his mother showing that the defendant intended to kill Long, added Hardin.

“The Moore County Sheriff’s Office and officers from several other agencies worked diligently in investigating and presenting this case,” said Hardin. “Additionally, the jury should be commended for their two-week service.”

District Attorney Mike Hardin, Assistant District Attorney Drew Cochran, and Assistant District Attorney Brian Chapman prosecuted the case.
