NC authorities search for inmate who escaped in dump truck

UPDATE: Richard Alexander Mundy has been recaptured.

LAURINBURG, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in North Carolina are searching for an inmate they said escaped from a work detail in a dump truck.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety said Richard Alexander Mundy, 53, was working in an off-prison assignment in Laurinburg just before noon Thursday when he stole the dump truck, news outlets reported.

The dump truck was found unattended in Randleman on Friday morning and the state Department of Corrections is on scene investigating, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office said.

Mundy was seen Thursday afternoon in Asheboro driving a white, single cab Chevrolet truck with a black flat bed and side racks, the sheriff’s office said. The truck is also believed to be stolen.

Mundy is serving a more than 28-year prison sentence for robbery with a dangerous weapon and should be considered dangerous, the sheriff’s office said. His projected release was in 2025. Anyone who sees him should call 911, authorities said.

Mundy is about 5 feet 10 inches tall with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was wearing a gray T-shirt and green pants when he escaped but may be in a white T-shirt and ball cap, the sheriff’s office said.
