An observant neighbor noticed flames and smoke coming from a home across the street in an Aberdeen neighborhood Wednesday evening and called 911. Emergency crews responded to the scene in Forest Hills within minutes.
The homeowner and his dog were not at the home on Wildwood Road.
Flames were coming from the area of the master bedroom on the ground floor. As the fire appeared to be extinguished by firefighters, smoke and flames suddenly appeared from the second-floor attic area. Crews were able to get the fire out after a short while.
First responders remained on the scene for an extended time clearing out debris and making sure all hot spots were extinguished. Duke Progress arrived and shut off power to the residence. The home suffered extensive damage.
The Aberdeen Fire Marshal will be investigating the cause of the fire, and the Red Cross is providing assistance to the homeowner.
Responding to the scene were Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Fires & Rescue, Pinehurst Fire & Rescue, Pinebluff Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Moore County Red Cross and Aberdeen Police Department.
