Moore County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services and Narcotics Division teamed up with Seven Lakes Quality Care Pharmacy for an adoption and “Pill-Drop” event this past weekend.

Sheriff’s Deputies arrived with their new Animal Services trailer filled with furry guests. The new 7ft x 18.7’ft trailer has 17 animal compartments expandable to 22 compartments, two air-conditioning units, hot water heater, gas/commercial generator, 20 gallons of fresh water, aluminum walls, stainless steel interior, and storage areas. Deputy Mike Kantorowski set up a table with Pill-Drop information and “File of Life” magnets.

During the Quality Care pharmacy community event, in addition to animal adoptions, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office collected approximately 3,000 pills.

This “Pill-Drop” initiative addresses a vital safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet. Americans are advised that methods for disposing of unused medicines such as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose safety and health hazards.

“I would like to thank Quality Care Pharmacy for assisting us with our adoptions, disseminating File of Life Kits and the collection of unused and unwanted medications,” said Sheriff Godfrey. “Quality Care provided us with the perfect venue to debut our new trailer. The Animal Services trailer serves several purposes all designed to better serve the citizens of Moore County. It allows us to make more animals available during our adoption events and it also allows us to use it as a housing unit during natural disasters such as Hurricane Matthew. Previously, Moore County residents could find shelter but were limited on where their animals could go. We can now station the trailer in front of a shelter allowing both families and their furry family members’ shelter.”
