NC legislature watchdog agency shuttered

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina General Assembly has ended its brief return visit to Raleigh.

The Senate and House adjourned on Friday, two days after reconvening. The Senate finalized a replacement map for the state’s congressional districts and elected Greensboro construction firm owner Dwight Stone to a vacancy on the University of North Carolina’s governing board.

The two chambers also approved bills on Thursday for a cash bailout for the Department of Transportation and to distribute more disaster relief funds.

Now the full legislature isn’t scheduled back until Jan. 14.

Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper wrote House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger on Friday urging them to remain in town to negotiate a teacher pay plan deal. But Berger says negotiations ended when Cooper vetoed a pay bill last week.
