Dr. Quintin Oswald Carr, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines, North Carolina on December 22, 2017 with family by his side. He was born on November 27, 1925 to the late Charles Edgar and Clara Turner Carr in Broadway, Virginia.
After graduating from Broadway High School, Dr. Carr entered Bridgewater College in 1942. His studies were interrupted when he joined the US Army in 1944. He trained there as a paratrooper and a communications officer and spent time in the occupation forces in Japan immediately following World War II. On his return home, he re-enrolled at Bridgewater College, graduating in 1948. In addition to his studies, he was also President of the Athletic Association, co-captain of the cross-country team, a member of the Student Council and the Monogram Club, and was elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges.
He continued his education further, receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Virginia in 1952. It was during medical school that he met his wife, and the love of his life, Kathryn Short Carr of Lovingston, Virginia. After an internship in Wheeling, West Virginia, they settled in Staunton, Virginia where in 1954 he opened his private practice as a general practitioner, serving the Staunton community for more than 40 years. His love of and devotion to practicing medicine was inspiring to many. In addition to private patients, Dr. Carr touched many more lives serving as Staunton City Coroner, and as physician to the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind and the Boy Scouts of America. When asked his profession, Dr. Carr always responded that he was a “good ole country doctor.”
Dr. Carr grew up on a working farm which instilled in him a love of the outdoors. Much of his free time was spent in his beloved garden, whose bounty was shared with friends and neighbors. He spent many a happy hour golfing with friends and was a member of the Gypsy Hill Golf Course. He also enjoyed fishing, taking numerous trips to the Chesapeake Bay and to Florida with his “Blues Brothers.” And he was recognized for his outstanding sense of humor, always ready to cheer his friends with a clever pun or amusing joke.
Dr. Carr was a member of First Baptist Church in Staunton as well as the Staunton Civic Club and the Gypsy Hill Chapter of AARP. He also was a member of the UVa Alumni Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Dr. Carr is predeceased by his parents and siblings Helen “Sue” Pence, Benjamin Harrison Carr, Charles E. Carr, Jr., and Wendell Carr. He is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, Kathryn Ann Short, four daughters, Judith Gail Carr of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Susan Carol Carr of Charlotte, North Carolina, Gerri Lynn Carr of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Anne Carr Hauser (William) of Pinehurst, North Carolina, and two grandchildren, Sarah Ann Hauser of Richmond and William Carr Hauser of Bristow, Virginia.
A memorial service for Dr. Carr will begin at 10:30 am on Wednesday, January 3rd at St. Joseph of the Pines Chapel in the Health Center.
