Obituary for Allen Dale Cox

On Tuesday, March 21, 2023, Allen Dale Cox, age 51, laid down the burdens of this life and joined his Lord and Savior and many loved ones in heaven.  Allen’s mom and sister were on each side of his hospital bed, holding his hand and touching his arm as he peacefully slept away.

Allen was born on July 23, 1971 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, the only son of Harley Dale and Shirley Garner Cox. He was educated in the Robeson and Moore County School systems and attended Central Carolina Community College.  He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, having a small garden and cooking. He was handy with tools and a paint brush. He and his sister, Lynne enjoyed cheering on the NC State Wolfpack.  He loved animals, especially dogs. He enjoyed sneaking bacon to Tootsie and Jazzy when he thought Lynne wasn’t looking!

Allen had recently moved to Wilmington, NC where he was establishing a new, exciting and hopefully better chapter in his life. He enjoyed visiting nearby Carolina Beach and the USS North Carolina battleship. He even got to see some early blooming azaleas this year in a city known for their beauty. He also had made several new, good friends and found a church to attend. The day before he became ill, he worked at the Live Oak Bank Pavilion and seemed to really enjoy it.  Life was good there and for that, we are thankful because Allen’s life was not an easy one.  He faced many challenges and struggles all the while he never lost hope of better days through the faith he held in Jesus Christ.  In his final days, he battled pneumonia and its complications to the best of his ability. The family would like to thank the excellent staff of the Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Medical Intensive Care Unit in Wilmington, NC for the superb, kind, and comprehensive care provided.

Allen was preceded in death by his father, Harley Dale Cox.

He is survived by his devoted mother, the love of his life, Shirley Garner Cox; sister: Lynne Beck and brother-in-law, Randy; as well as many extended family members.

A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, 3:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 2237 Camp Easter Rd, Carthage, NC.  A time to visit with family will precede the service beginning at 2:00 p.m.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be offered to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 386, Southern Pines, NC 28288.
