Carole Henkel Rushforth, 83, of Pinehurst, North Carolina, formerly of Hawthorne, New York, died peacefully in her sleep on April 18, 2020, at Pinehurst Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Born September 1, 1936, in New York, New York, she is predeceased by her parents, Karl and Gerda Henkel, her husband William Joseph Rushforth, and her daughter Christa Elise Labriola.

Carole grew up in the Bronx, graduated from Walton High School class of 1954, and went on to work for Chase Bank and IBM in Manhattan. She married, moved to Hawthorne, NY and had 3 children. She was a faithful member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasantville, NY, vacationed annually on Cape Cod, MA, Candlewood Lake, CT, and in Englewood, FL.

Carole loved her German culture and carried on family traditions to honor her heritage. She took a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Germany in 1981. In 1986, Carole moved to Southern Pines, NC and then to Pinehurst, NC in 2001. She was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Southern Pines for 34 years.

Carole is survived by a son and daughter, Richard Rushforth and Carole (Rushforth) Ray of Pinehurst, NC, son-in-law Steven Ray of Pinehurst, NC, 5 grandchildren, Christopher, Kyle and Pamela Ray of Pinehurst, NC and Lindsey and Michael Labriola of Katonah, NY.

Carole’s remains will be placed with her husband Bill in the columbarium at our Saviour Lutheran Church in Southern Pines. She will also have remains placed with family at Mountain View Cemetery in New Fairfield, Ct.

Due to social distancing and final wishes, services will be limited to family members when circumstances allow. The abundance of kind wishes and support have been so very appreciated.
