Obituary for Carolyn Jean McLeod

Carolyn Jean McLeod, 82, peacefully passed away on June 15, 2022, in Salt Lake City. She was born in Charleston, S.C. on November 20, 1939. Jean grew up living behind Red Top, a country store and gas station on Highway 17, Charleston.  She first met Robert McLeod at the store in 1954, and they married June 23, 1956, on James Island, S.C.  Jean graduated from St. Andrew’s Parish High School in 1958 and soon after, had her first child. Jean and Robert settled in Charlotte, N.C. where they raised three children.  In later years, Jean worked as a secretary/administrator for two different companies.

In 1977, due to Robert’s work, Jean started a new phase of life traveling and living all over the world. They lived in Anchorage, AK, Australia, and Japan.  In Australia, Jean had to learn to drive on the left side of the road. In Japan, she had to learn how to get around, shop, and raise her last child in Tokyo while not knowing Japanese. Moving continued to Colorado, Georgia, Scotland, and Thailand until finally settling in Robert’s childhood home in Southern Pines, N.C.  Robert passed away in 2011.  Jean continued to live in Southern Pines close to her daughter until moving to Salt Lake City in 2020 to be close to her youngest daughter. The move occurred just as the COVID pandemic started but she was able to adjust, just like so many times before, until her passing.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Robert McLeod, and siblings: Virginia (Joe) Bryson, Donnie (Betty) Messervy, Ann (Jack) Flynt, and Barbara (Don) McKesson.

She is survived by her three children: Bob (Loralene) McLeod, Anne (Andy) Bleggi, and Sue (Erik) Christensen as well as 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She is also survived by three younger siblings: T.W. (Peggy) Messervy, Luder (Dale) Messervy, and Patti (Frederick) Milton.
