obituary Catherine Ann Barrett

Ms. Catherine Ann Barrett, the oldest daughter of the late Reverend Gaston Barrett, Sr. and Mrs. Bessie Ray Barrett, was born September 20, 1933 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Catherine departed this world on June 14, 2020 while living at Accordius Health at Aberdeen rest home in Aberdeen, North Carolina.

A graveside service will be held 1:00 pm Friday at Mt. Olive AME Zion Church conducted by the Rev. Angela Davis. The family requests that all attending please wear a mask for your protection and in respect of others.The body will lie in state at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home on Thursday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Elizabeth Barrett and brothers, Gaston Barrett, Jr. and Floyd Barrett.  Catherine is now reunited with her family in God’s hands.

Catherine was called “Cat” by most that knew her.  She was vibrant, spunky and full of life. Catherine was a friend to many and loved by all that met her. Catherine grew up in Carthage, North Carolina and was educated at Pinkney High School.   Catherine accepted Christ at an early age and attended Mt. Olive A.M.E Zion Church all of her life.  She was an usher and dedicated member of the choir.  Catherine lovingly accepted the role of raising and caring for her late sister’s children.  She was a source of guidance and strength to them all of their lives.  

Catherine leaves to cherish her loving memories her nieces and nephews, Gloria Brooks of Carthage, N.C, Joyce McNeil (Eugene) of Rosedale, NY, Margaret P. Barrett of Raleigh, N.C., Ronnie Barrett of Chula Vista, California, Donnie Barrett (Brenda) of Raeford, N.C., and Operdella Barrett of Southern Pines, N.C.; and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews as well as many other relatives and friends. 

Catherine’s favorite hymn is “There’s A Storm Out, On the Ocean” by Bishop Ronald E. Brown.  She lived her life believing and professing, “If your soul is not anchored in Jesus you will surely drift away”.
