DeWitt R. Petterson, 90, of Southern Pines and formerly Seven Lakes, went home to his Lord on Thursday, June 21st at the FirstHealth Hospice House.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel at Belle Meade, 100 Waters Dr. Southern Pines, on Saturday, June 30th at 2:00 P.M.

Born in Roanoke, VA on March 27, 1928, DeWitt was the son of the late Rolfe and Evelyn Ross Petterson. After his high school graduation, he went on to obtain his Bachelors’ Degree from Roanoke College andhis Masters in Engineering from the University of Virginia – Charlottesville. He served his country in the U.S. Army in the mid 1950s. After an honorable discharge, DeWitt would return to higher education by attending MIT, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1959. It was during his time in Massachusetts that he met and married Elizabeth Ungar. DeWitt moved to N.J. where he worked for Johnson & Johnson. He moved to Seven Lakes North after his retirement in 1991. 

Dewitt was the loving husband of Elizabeth “Tinkie” Petterson. He was the father of Lisa Miller, husband Mark, Karen Terlizzi, husband Bob, and Ross Petterson, wife Carol. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren: Hilary Mancik, husband Erik, Adam, Allison Swim, husband Alex, Samantha Petterson, husband Jacob Stauffer and Hunter Petterson, wife Maria. He was the great – grandfather of Olivia, Connor, Calvin, Juniper and Arthur.
