Obituary for Douglas James Garner of Robbins

Douglas (Dougie) James Garner of Robbins went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.

He passed away peacefully at his home in Robbins, NC, surrounded by his family who loved and admired him so much.  He was a devout Christian, devoted husband to wife Betty for almost 65 years, loving Daddy to his three girls, “PawPaw” to his two grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

Dougie was born on August 19, 1931 in Moore County to his parents Elias Garner and Alena Sheffield Garner.  He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Ritter Garner, his parents, and his siblings, Charlie Sheffield, Dossie Garner Cole and Elias Garner, Jr.

He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Garner Mabe (Charles), Ellen Garner, Helen Garner Maness (Ed) all from Robbins.  Grandchildren are Travis (Alison) Mabe from Bear Creek and Tannah Mabe Moneymaker (Stuart) from Eagle Springs.

Great grandchildren are Mattie, Armissa and Judson Moneymaker and Tori Mabe. Sisters are Daisy Maness of Erect, Dora Hussey (Harold) and Faye Hussey (Waylon) of Robbins.  Many nieces, nephews and friends.  Especially Nephew Billy Hussey, who was like a son to Dougie and Betty.

Dougie was an exceptionally precise carpenter by trade and started working for his uncle, Lockey Garner, at a young age; building houses, chicken houses and barns throughout Moore and surrounding counties.  When work was slack he always supported his family working at JP Stevens in Aberdeen or the Lace Plant in Robbins.  On May 6, 1974 he became employed by the NC Department of Transportation of Moore County, Carthage in the Maintenance Department and retired September 1, 1996 with 24 ½ years of service.

Throughout his 50+ plus years of being a member of Calvary Baptist Church, he was a choir member and served on various committees, trustee for the church, assistant treasurer and was still serving on the Building and Grounds Committee.

Dougie was a humble, friendly man whose priorities were his God, family and friends.  He Loved Nascar (Ford) and Atlanta Braves.  He attended many races at Rockingham, taking his grandson Travis instilling the love of Nascar at an early age in him.  During the World Series this past year, he never missed a game, staying up late at night rooting for his team, the Braves, all the way to winning the World Series. Family vacations at Topsail Island in the fall were always his and Betty’s favorite time of the year.  He loved to fish and enjoyed just being together with family.

His family referred to him as the “Master Canner” as he always had a plentiful garden and he spent many hours prepping and preparing his garden spots, early and late gardens, whether on his tractor or pulling weeds from sitting on a bucket that he turned over.  Back surgery in February of 2018 didn’t deter him from his garden.  He was back on his tractor by the end of the garden season. He would share with family and friends vegetables that he grew.

A celebration of his life will be held 4:00 PM, Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Calvary Baptist Church,  with Reverend Todd Moore, Reverend Kenneth McNeill and Brad Harrison officiating.  The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family request masks to be worn in the church.

His family wishes to thank the First Health Hospice and Palliative Care of Pinehurst, especially Sam, his nurse, for their support and guidance in Dougie’s final weeks.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dougie to Calvary Baptist church, Kitchen Remodeling Fund, P O Box 1695, Robbins, NC  27325.

Kennedy Funeral Home is honored to serve the Garner Family.
