Frank Joseph Zehnder Jr. completed his final round on life’s course on a gorgeous Spring morning, April 16, 2019 at First Health Hospice, Pinehurst, NC.

Son of the late Frank J. and Mary Talbott Zehnder, he was born at home on the family farm in Jeffersontown, KY. Frank graduated from Purdue University with a degree in chemical engineering and received his MS from Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh.

He married his sweetheart, Connie Stewart in Pittsburgh and she accompanied him on his adventures throughout the following 63 years. His work took him from Spang-Chalfont in Ambridge, PA, to McKay Co. in York Pa. to Caterpillar Tractor Company with six year stops in Aurora & Peoria IL, & Tokyo, Japan.

He retired to Seven Lakes, NC to enjoy new and old friends & his family and to pursue his passion for golf, playing approximately 100 rounds a year for nearly twenty years.

Frank and Connie volunteered for years with Meals on Wheels, Moore County and loved hearing the stories of those they served.

On February 5, 2011, Frank married Janet Waugh at the Overlook in Southern Pines. They resided at Belle Meade and enjoyed golfing on a very regular basis. Dad would readily admit that Janet was the better golfer but apparently that was never an issue.

Frank and Janet were members of the worship community at the Overlook and for years, Frank served as a reader. His strong voice, perfect pitch and articulation will be greatly missed.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife Connie and his younger brothers, Calvin and Kenneth.

He is survived by his wife Janet Waugh of Southern Pines NC; daughters Cathy Perich (George) of Windsor Ontario, Nancy Fitzpatrick, (Doug) of York PA, Joyce Hartmann (Scott) of Castle Rock CO, and son Ken Zehnder (Lynn) of Galena IL. Frank was loving and admired “Papa” to 12 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Frank’s extended Waugh family members include Dana, Peter and Brian and families.

Funeral Services will be held at the Belle Meade chapel in Southern Pines at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2019 with a reception to follow. Private burial will precede the services at St. Anthony Cemetery.
