obituary Irene Baker Southern Pines

Irene Baker, of Southern Pines, died on July 9, 2020.  She was a native of Greenfield, Mass.

Irene was a Registered Nurse and graduated from Franklin Hospital in Greenfield, MA.  She affiliated at Boston City Hospital for several special studies in pediatrics and contagious diseases.  She practiced nursing in Mass, Virginia, California and Paris, France at the American Hospital.

Irene became an Airline Stewardess with Northeastern Airlines, who later merged with Delta Airlines.  She was stationed in Boston, Mass and her flights took her though out the Northeast, including New Brunswick & Canada.  It was one of her flights that she met Bert L. Baker, a young Air Force officer stationed in Presque Isle, Maine.  They were married six months later.  During his Air Force career, they had sixteen different residences including Japan and Paris, France.

After returning to the US, they resided in McLean, VA.  She joined the firm of Holly and Spain Reality in Arlington as a sales representative and worked in that field for 12 years before retiring with her husband to Whispering Pines and later to Southern Pines.  She was a member of Talamore and Mid-South Country Clubs.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Joseph of the Pines Guild where she served on the Board for several years.  She is survived by her son Bert L. Baker, Jr., wife Barbara, of Donnelly, ID and a granddaughter, Kelli Baker of Newport, WA.  She was the aunt of Connie Romand and David Rediker of PA.

She will be intered at Arlington National Cemetery.
