Joe Tansey, age 83, passed peacefully on September 1, 2018, surrounded by his devoted wife and family.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Maureen (Mullan); 4 children, Deb (Gary) Zimmermann; Joe (Jeanne) Tansey; Kathleen (Brian) Hutton; and Joyce (Jay) Williams; 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Joe was brother to the late John and Bernard Tansey.

Joe was born in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York to Bernard and Mary (Regan) Tansey. He graduated from Lawrence High School, Cedarhurst, Queens, NY. As a young man, Joe worked with the Long Island Lighting Company, then enjoyed an illustrious four-decade career with the New York Telephone Company (later NYNEX/Verizon). Joe’s first love was for his wife and family and was a man with many interests. He was especially talented with his hands and enjoyed working with his extensive collection of tools. He enjoyed camping with family and the Boy Scouts, playing golf and endeavoring to improve his 10 handicap, rooting for his favorite NY and NC teams, traveling across the U.S., fishing in the family canoe, photography, reading about U.S. history, and learning to use new technology. He was proud of his Irish heritage. In the past, Joe was Troup Master for B.S.A. Troup 351 and active in the Knights of Columbus and the Golf Country Club of Whispering Pines.

The family will receive friends at a celebration of life on Friday, September 7, 2018 from 6 – 8 pm with a Prayer Vigil beginning at 7pm at Boles Funeral Home, 425 W Pennsylvania Ave, Southern Pines, NC 28387, (910) 692-6262. 

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 10 am at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 160 E Vermont Ave, Southern Pines, NC 28387, (910) 692-6613. Immediately following will be an inurnment service at Pinelawn Memorial Park, 1105 Morganton Rd, Southern Pines, NC 28387.
