Jonathan “Banks” Richardson, 63, of Aberdeen passed away Saturday surrounded by his family at UNC Hospital from complications associated with his 19 month battle with multiple myeloma.

Banks was born in Moore County on March 22, 1956 to Betty and Decatur Richardson. He graduated from Pinecrest High School in 1974. He loved sports and played baseball, football and basketball during his school years and men’s league softball after graduation. He went to work for Stanley Furniture in West End after graduation as assistant foreman in the cabinet department.

Banks married his soulmate, Barbara Ann Jones of Raeford on June 27, 1982. He changed occupations shortly thereafter and went to work for Watkins Color Graphics learning pre-press work. Following its closure, he went to Highland Press in Fayetteville and then to First Impressions in Raeford to be closer to home. His last employment before retirement in 2016 was Parish Sign and Service in Raeford.

Banks has been a member of Southern Pines United Methodist Church for 43 years. He served as a greeter and volunteered with the weekly Food Pantry. He was a member of the Sandhills Classic Street Rod Association and an early member of the Moore County Bassmasters when it organized. His many hobbies included golf, barefoot water skiing and basketball. He was affectionately called O.B. (OuterBanks) for his long range shots. He loved fishing, both fresh and salt water and classic cars became a passion after buying a 1969 Roadrunner and partially restoring it in 2001.

Banks and Barbara would attend car shows and cruise-ins often. He was an avid Tarheel and Rams club member attending baseball and football games and enjoying the full tailgate experience on game days with many friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Barbara Jones Richardson of Aberdeen, his parents, Betty and Decatur Richardson of Southern Pines, his uncle Robert (Barbara) Harris of Eagle Springs, his aunt Peggy Swaringen of Southern Pines, his uncle Clement (Linda) Richardson of Jamestown, his aunt Sharon (Pryor) Moon of West End, his aunt Hilda (Larry) Summey of Spartanburg, SC and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A visitation will be held Wednesday October 9, 2019 from 6-8pm at Southern Pines United Methodist Church, 175 Midland Road and a Celebration of Life on Thursday October 10, 2019 at 11am also at Southern Pines United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SPUMC Food Pantry, 175 Midland Road, Southern Pines, NC 28387 or UNC Lineberger Cancer Center, PO Box 1050, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 designated to Multiple Myeloma Research.
