Obituary for Joyce Oatman Coleman of Vass

Joyce Oatman Coleman, age 84, of Vass (Wood Lake), formerly of Cleveland, NY passed away on Thursday, April 7th at her home surrounded by her family. Joyce was born in Oneida NY and spent her early life on the north shore of Oneida Lake and in Central Square where with her husband Bob, raised her 4 children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Susan and Elizabeth.

She is survived by her children, Robert A. Coleman, Janice (William) Mullin, William (Dawne) Coleman all of New York and Caryn (Scott Mura) of Southern Pines, sister Kathryn (Ron) Darrow of New York, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A teacher for years, Joyce piloted the first all-day kindergarten program in the Central Square school district. She loved all sports, especially Syracuse basketball and NY Yankee baseball. Personally, she enjoyed golf, tennis and bowling. A voracious reader and jeopardy watcher, Joyce also enjoyed time with her many friends, children and grandchildren.

North Carolina friends and family are welcome to a celebration at Joyce’s home Sunday, April 10th from 2-5. Following a private graveside service, a celebration of life will be held in NY, at the American Legion Post 915 Route 49 in Central Square NY on Monday, April 18th at 4:00 pm.
