Samantha Rose Davis, 17, passed away at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina surrounded by her family and friends shortly after midnight on Sunday, September 23, 2018. Sam, as her friends and family called her, was competing at the Hares and Hounds invitational cross-country event in Charlotte on Saturday, September 22, 2018. She collapsed at the 4K mark and went into cardiac arrest.

Sam was born on October 22, 2000 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, OH. Her family moved to San Antonio, TX in August of 2001 and then moved to North Carolina in 2004 after her father finished his last tour in the Air Force and to be closer to Jon’s parents, Jack and Laverne Davis.

Sam and her sister, Emily, were active in the Girl Scouts from Kindergarten through 8th grade. In 2nd grade, Sam’s grandmother, Laverne Davis, arranged for the girls to take piano lessons, which they continue to this day. Sam started playing the trumpet at New Century Middle School, which she continued to play in the Union Pines High School marching band located in Cameron, NC. Sam became the Trumpet Section Leader this fall. She was vice-president of Tri-M, a music honor society. Sam was also the president of the North Carolina State LEO club, a service organization. Sam was a member of the National Honor Society. Sam volunteered at Habitat For Humanity with her old Girl Scout Troop this past summer.

A talented athlete, at New Century Middle School, Sam started Cross Country in 6th grade. In 7th and 8th grades, Sam also started playing basketball and softball until her freshman year at Union Pines High School. Sam made the varsity team for Cross-Country, Winter Track, and Spring Track her Sophomore year.

In the summer of 2015, she travelled to Charleston with the Catholic Heart Work Camp to help paint local churches and clean up neighborhoods.

From 2014 until her death, Sam helped teach 4th grade Sunday School at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinehurst, NC. From 2015 to 2016, Sam and her sister volunteered with the Catholic Youth Council.

In 2017, Sam, her mother Rebecca, and her sister Emily went on a mission trip with her Spanish class to Guatemala where they helped paint the school, fed the local community, ministered to the impoverished hillside community, and spent time at an orphanage.

Sam’s friends shared that Sam was always smiling and asking people how they were doing. Sam would strike up conversations with anyone, anywhere. Her warmth and compassion for people had no boundaries.

Samantha is survived by her parents, Jonathan and Rebecca Davis, owners of Wild Birds Unlimited in Southern Pines, her younger sister Emily and an extended family of cousins, second cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends. Generous to the end, Sam was a tissue and eye donor.
