Richard Theodore Schalz (Ted) passed away peacefully at age 92 with his family by his side at Fox Hollow Assisted Living in Pinehurst, North Carolina on January 12, 2018.

Born January 18, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN to the late Benno and Florence Schalz, he graduated from Murray High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served in the Pacific theatre. Following his stint in the military, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota and later the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire where he studied elementary education. With degree in hand, he moved to San Diego and began teaching in the San Diego Public Schools, first at Garfield Elementary School, and later as an administrator at several other schools. He retired in 1984 from Dewey Elementary School. During his 30 years in the school system, he earned a master’s degree in Education Administration at San Diego State University and a JD from the University of San Diego School of Law.

Upon retiring from the school system, Ted put his law degree to use in a second career in real estate development, completing with partners, a condominium project in Vista, California, as well as serving as general counsel of a small hotel group in downtown San Diego.

Ted was an avid golfer and thus retired to Pinehurst, North Carolina to enjoy life (and attempt to shoot his age).

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alice, and daughter Julie Harris, son-in-law Gregg Harris, and grandchildren Max and Catherine.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Village Chapel of Pinehurst, NC.
