William Edward “Ed” Jernigan, Sr., age 93, of Carthage, passed away on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Pinelake Health and Rehab in Carthage, surrounded by his family.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, March 5, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Pastor Eugene Ussery officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the church and other times at the home of his daughter Libby McNamara 201 Mine Road, Carthage.

Ed was born in Cumberland County on December 1, 1924 to William Ashley and Helen Carter Jernigan. Ed worked for Moore County Schools for many years in the Maintenance Department and as Maintenance Supervisor for several years. He was a volunteer fireman for Carthage in the 1960’s through 1980’s. He proudly served in the United States Army during WWII in the Pacific Campaign. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and working outside until he was no longer able to do so. He loved the Lord and was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his children, Elizabeth “Libby” McNamara and husband Dan of Carthage, Edward Jernigan and wife Erica of Naperville, Illinois; five grandchildren, Todd, Jennifer, Trey, Jacob and Kailey; six great-grandchildren, Joshua, Carter, Grace, Taylor, Jordan and Kinley.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Livengood Jernigan; parents, William Ashley and Helen Carter Jernigan; daughter, Christine Jernigan Caddell; sisters, Margaret George and Dorothy Seawell.
