One airlifted after accident on Central Drive

A two-vehicle accident in Southern Pines sent one person to a trauma center Thursday. Emergency units were dispatched to the intersection of Central Drive at Mill Creek Road shortly after 4 p.m.

Units arrived on the scene to find a Chevrolet Volt in the roadway with side impact damage to the driver side and a Ford F150 truck with damage to the front end.

The male driver of the Chevrolet was entrapped, and firefighters had to pry open the door to free him. Due to his injuries, a medevac helicopter was requested, and he was taken to the Moore County Airport and airlifted to a trauma center. His condition is unknown as of this report.

The driver of the truck did not require treatment.

The southbound lane and turning lane of Central Drive were blocked for a brief period while the roadway could be cleared.

Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire Department, Whispering Pines Fire Department, Moore County EMS and Southern Pines Police Department.
