One person was seriously injured Saturday night on May Street in Southern Pines.

The single-vehicle accident happened just before midnight at the intersection of May Street and East Morganton Road.

The driver of a Buick sedan was traveling south on May Street and failed to make the curve. The vehicle crossed over the concrete islands at the intersection and traveled through an area of thick brush before striking a tree and coming to a stop.

Firefighters used hydraulic tools to gain access to the driver. A helicopter was called for but unable to fly due to weather conditions.

The male driver was transported to Firsthealth Moore Regional by EMS.

Southern Pines Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Southern Pines Police.
