O'Neal student awarded scholarship for international service

O’Neal student Abigail Wilson has been awarded the United Planet Merit Scholarship by the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). This scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated a commitment to cross-cultural understanding and a desire for international travel and volunteer opportunities.

NSHSS partner, United Planet, is an international nonprofit organization devoted to building a global network of leaders and volunteers through immersive international service and internships. Abigail was one of eleven students who were selected to each be awarded the scholarship.

Abigail grew up living in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was here that she gained an appreciation for the world around her, and the people that call it home. When she was in elementary school, she organized with a group of other students to clean up trash around the island weekly. This formative experience of her youth has helped shape her into the public service-minded student she is today.

Regarding her future travels, Abigail stated, “Serving abroad will lead me to giving back to the world that I love so much and that is something I would like to continue throughout my life. I believe my experience of living and serving abroad in a different culture would be something that I will be passionate about and take to heart. My values are appreciation and advocacy of the Earth and its people. I am an easy learner and I love embracing tasks that challenge me. I do not shy away from a challenge; I think for solutions. I believe that I will be a helpful member of any program because of my positive attitude and work ethic.”

To give you some background on the organization that awarded Abigail the scholarship, NSHSS is the premier international honors and scholarship program cofounded by Claes Nobel and James Lewis. It offers a lifetime of benefits, pairing the highest performing students worldwide with high school and college scholarships, events, connections, internships, and career opportunities that begin in high school and carry on through college and careers.
