Local father-daughter team Lonnie Matthews and Kimberly Graham are already gearing up for the holiday season at Pastimes, the family-owned antique shop that now calls Southern Pines home. Together, the two are confident that Moore County shoppers will be able to find something for everyone on their list from any of the shop’s 32 unique vendors.
Earlier this year, Pastimes had no choice but to pack up shop and relocate from their previous storefront in West End due to the upcoming highway expansion. The family was luckily able to find a shop large enough to accommodate all vendors and the necessary retail spaces.
“Business has been great since moving to Southern Pines,” said Kimberly. “We have met new people that had never come to our West End location, and of course many of our customers have followed us to the new location to shop.”
The shop offers a staggering selection of items, with products ranging from furniture to home goods, to décor, toys, and more. A vast majority of the goods currently available at Pastimes are vintage and antique, with vendors rotating their stock regularly.
“The best part of running the shop is the 32 vendors we have in the store; most have been with us for many years and are like family,” Kimberly noted. “We have 32 booths and also a full clothing boutique. Each time you come you will see something new.”
Along with Kimberly and Lonnie, the individual vendors work to bring new items to the shop daily to keep their booths updated, clean, and well stocked. Each vendor displays their items at their own stall or booth, giving Pastimes the feeling of walking through a miniature mall of assorted antique and contemporary goods. Shoppers enjoy this experience so much, in fact, the Pastimes family has even won awards recognizing their efforts.
“Pastimes was originally run by my mom and dad — they both loved antiques and had a booth at an antique mall in Sanford before opening Pastimes,” Kimberly explained.
When Kimberly’s mother, LouAnn Matthews, passed away unexpectedly last year, Kimberly quickly stepped up to help her father with the shop, including the shop changing locations in June.
“Having this experience with my dad has been great,” said Kimberly. “We go on ‘junking’ adventures to find all our treasures. The time we spend together is amazing.”
The family has always called the Sandhills home, with Lonnie having been born and raised on a tobacco farm near Whispering Pines. When he was 18 years old, Lonnie purchased a farm in the Roseland area, which is where Kimberly was raised. The family has stayed local, and both Lonnie and Kimberly now live in Seven Lakes.
Despite the change in location, the core values of Pastimes have remained the same. Shoppers are still invited to peruse the store in a warm, welcoming environment, and Lonnie and Kimberly hope that patrons are able to enjoy both their time spent in the shop and also any nostalgic treasures they might find along the way.
