Pedestrian struck in Aberdeen, airlifted for treatment

An 18-year-old man is in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle while running along U.S. Highway 1. The accident occurred just south of Aberdeen near the intersection with Pinehurst Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Friday.

A motorist said he saw the young man running down the side of the darkened road and turned around to go back and check on him. As he came upon the area, he saw the man lying on the side of the road after being struck by a Ford F150 pickup truck pulling a large trailer. According to the highway patrol, as the pickup driver passed the man, the side mirror struck him. The driver pulled the truck off the road and returned to check on the injured man.

When emergency crews arrived on the scene, they found him face down on the side of the road with traumatic injuries. A helicopter from Valley Air was dispatched. Paramedics transported the patient to a field at the corner of Highway 211 and Indiana Extension, where a landing zone was set up. The helicopter transported the patient to a trauma center.

Highway patrol is investigating the accident.
