Pedestrian fatally struck by car in Aberdeen

A pedestrian was struck and killed Thursday evening while crossing U.S. 1 in Aberdeen. The accident happened in front of Thai Orchid just before 8:30 p.m.

Ronald Phillips, 78, and his friend were crossing U.S. 1 by the traffic light at the Exxon gas station walking east toward Thai Orchid when he was struck.

The friend was walking just a few feet in front of him. He was struck by a Ford Mustang that was traveling in the northbound lane.

When emergency crews arrived on the scene, Phillips was deceased and lying face down in the outside lane. The female driver of the Mustang remained on the scene.

Captain Chavis, with Aberdeen Police Department, said Phillips is from Ottawa, Canada and was in town for a cycling event.

One lane of traffic was shut down while investigators worked. The medical examiner was called to the scene. Aberdeen Police are investigating the accident.

This is the second pedestrian death in the same area Sandhills Sentinel has reported on in a little over 18 months. In March of last year, a man was struck by a vehicle and died several days later.
