Pinehurst man bitten rabid fox

A Pinehurst man is recovering after being attacked by a rabid fox Saturday evening.

The 65-year-old man was walking his dog in the 100 block of Rattlesnake Trail when he was bitten 13 times by the animal. The resident said the fox bit him on his ankle, arm, and leg.

After wrestling the fox to the ground, he was able to contain the fox in a trash can. The victim said he lost a lot of blood and was transported to the hospital.

The animal was taken to the state lab in Raleigh on Monday, and testing results were positive for rabies.

The gentleman said people need “to be vigilant in the area” especially young children. He said he is also concerned about the many military moms pushing their children in strollers on their daily walks.

While confirming the fox tested positive for rabies in a statement, Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields advised “pet owners in the area of Rattlesnake Trail in Pinehurst to monitor their pets while they are outside.”

“Rabies is a highly contagious disease, and this fox could have been in contact with other animals in the area as well,” said Fields.

The man is undergoing treatment for the disease.
