Pinehurst Police warn of scammers posing as law enforcement

The Pinehurst Police Department said a resident recently received a scam phone call and said they are warning citizens that the department does not call people requesting fees to be paid.

The police department announced on the Village of Pinehurst’s Facebook page Monday, April 10, that a scammer identified himself as Sergeant Kevin Gorham.

“He advised the victim that there were legal fees regarding a recent traffic crash he was in that needed to be paid,” said the police department about the caller having a clear American accent and using a 910 area phone number. “The subject told the victim that if he did not pay him $271 through the Zelle app he would take out a warrant for his arrest. The officer completed an incident report.”

The department also advised residents, “If someone contacts you unsolicited and request you to pay monies through Zelle, cash app, Venmo, a prepaid visa/Mastercard, or by wire, they are most likely trying to scam you.”

Please contact the Pinehurst Police Department at 910.295.3141 to report scams.
