Pinehurst Country Club has done it again! The two-time defending champs pulls off their third win in a row to extend their domination over the Carolinas Women’s Club Team Championship.

In the inaugural year of the championship, Pinehurst CC and Cowan’s Ford Country Club faced off in a finals when the format was match play. In last year’s Championship, Pinehurst CC edged out Cowan’s Ford CC by only four shots to claim the title for a second year in a row.

“It is a rivalry but the comradery is incredible,” said Pinehurst CC Team Captain, Kendra Muir. “Every day we’re out there playing each other but we’re rooting each other on. It’s a really friendly rivalry.”

Thunderstorms were threatening to put a damper on Thursday’s round but it turned out to be a beautiful but slightly breezy day in Greensboro. Both Pinehurst CC and Cowan’s Ford CC entered Thursday’s final round tied at 10-under-par, 278 total for the first two rounds of the Championship. The final round format was Pinehurst Alternate shot; the most difficult format of the three played throughout the Championship. In this format, each player on each two-woman side tees off, then players switch balls and proceed to hit their partner’s ball on the second shot. At that point, the side selects the ball to be played and then alternate shots until the ball is holed.

Pinehurst showed why the format is named for their home club. The side of Patty Moore and Muir of Pinehurst CC shot the only gross, under-par round in the Pinehurst Alternate Shot format. Their teammates, Sally Means and Donna Tanner, shot 8-over-par, 80 to help claim the title by three shots over Cowan’s Ford CC.

“We just have such a great team,” said Muir. “We rented a house this week. We have dinner together and hang out and watch TV. We’re not just here to play golf. It’s just a fun event and we hope that more women will play in it.”

In the Carolinas Division (net scores only) first flight, Pinehurst CC (B), represented by Debbie Hockman, Sue McDermott, Anne Bourne and Jean Peters, was also able to pull off the victory with a 32-under-parm, 400 total for the Championship. Pine Needles Resort finish in second place with a 28-under-par, 404 total and Women’s Club Team new-comers, Cullasaja Club finished in third with a 15-under-par, 417 total.

In the Carolinas Division (net scores only) second flight Colonial Country Club (B), represented by Ginger Bowman and Elaine Schuermann, Beth Smith and Katherine DeVore, won with a 8-under-par, 424 total for the Championship.

In the Carolinas Division (net scores only) third flight, Wildwood Green Golf Club, represented by Chris Nims, Kim Waterhouse, Kelley McHenry and Denice Short, took home the win with a 2-under-par, 430 total for the Championship.
