SPPD reports increase in cases of mail theft

The Southern Pines Police Department’s Awards Committee met to consider peer and leadership team nominations for employees who performed in an exemplary manner during the second quarter of 2022.

The department recognized outstanding performance for officers Steven Wessman, Presley Stevenson and Greg Powers.

Employee of the Quarter: Officer Steven Wessman was recognized as the Employee of the Quarter.

During this time period, Wessman made a total of 18 arrests, four of which were felony narcotics violations. Wessman continuously takes a proactive policing approach in his assigned zone to address drug crime and community concerns.

Life Saving Medal: On June 23, while Officer Presley Stevenson was driving home from work and outside of his jurisdiction, he displayed initiative and stopped to check on a disabled motorist on Highway 211.

Because he took the time to stop and check on a citizen, he discovered the person was in medical distress. Stevenson took the necessary steps to forcefully unlock the vehicle that was secured with the unresponsive motorist inside and then help provide life saving measures to the person.

As a result of Stevenson’s actions, it was determined that he was responsible for helping save the life of this individual who was having a diabetic episode.

Making A Difference Award: The Making A Difference Award is presented to an employee that has been recognized by an employee or member of the community for service that is positive and professional.

Acting Sergeant Greg Powers was awarded the Making A Difference Award after a member of the community spoke to Powers’ supervisor regarding a call for service. The citizen praised Powers’ compassion, kindness and professionalism when providing dialogue and support for the citizen and a family member.

“These officers are a reminder of the professionalism and dedication we strive to provide to the community every day,” said Chief of Police Nick Polidori. “Congratulations to each of these employees at the Southern Pines Police Department!”
