A one-year-old child has been located unharmed after being abducted during the theft of a vehicle in Southern Pines Friday.

The child’s mother was making a food delivery at Timberlane Apartments on Murray Hill Road for DoorDash when the car was stolen just after 9 p.m. The child was in a car-seat in the back of the vehicle.

The mother told police when she arrived at the apartments there were “an unusual number of people in the area.”

It is reported that she left her car unlocked with the engine running.

“As the driver was making the food delivery, a black male was observed approaching the vehicle and subsequently stealing the vehicle, said Southern Pines Police Chief Robert Temme in a news release.  “A possible description of this suspect was a young black male, thin in stature, with an “afro” style haircut, approximately six feet tall wearing jeans and a dark hooded sweatshirt.”

A possible second black male suspect may have been involved, but authorities did not release a description.

The suspects left the vehicle parked on South Gaines Street in Southern Pines, and authorities found the child inside the car at 10:15 p.m.

“Our investigation will continue throughout the evening, with our Forensic/Crime Scene Division processing the stolen vehicle,” said Temme.

The police are asking if anyone has information on this case, to please contact them at 910-692-7031 or the anonymous tip line at 910-673-4110.
